Racial incidents at UC San Diego illuminate a younger generation's fears and hopes.

The adults in the church sanctuary were itching for a fight, eager to redress years of indignities absorbed growing up black in San Diego.

The black UC San Diego students were nursing a different sort of wrath: the psychic pain of hardworking high achievers, envisioning post-racial acceptance but reduced to crude racial stereotypes instead.

The generations met at a San Diego community forum that drew more than 600 people who were upset over a string of racial incidents spawned by a party promoted by white fraternity members from UC San Diego, "in honor of" Black History Month, that promised a taste of "life in the ghetto" -- cheap clothes, watermelon, malt liquor, gold teeth.

When I first heard about the "Compton Cookout," I was more disappointed than angry. I wished somebody would round up those frat boys, drop them off in Compton and let those "thugs" and "ghetto chicks" they mocked have at them.

I cringed when black students responded with demands and black politicians with press conferences.

Can we not play the "victim" card? I thought. Let's denounce the ignorance and move on.

But the church forum and a visit to campus this week taught me that I was wrong.

Like so many things involving race, the incident was not the issue; the party was just the spark. The problems it unmasked and the venom it unleashed -- waves of anger and backlash -- are far more troubling and dangerous.

A few days after news of the party broke, a student-run television program used racial slurs to mock black students. A noose was found dangling from a library bookcase. A pillowcase fashioned into a KKK-style hood was slipped over the head of a campus statue.

On campus, there were anti-racism rallies and counterdemonstrations defending "free speech." There have been heated classroom discussions, angry conversations and awkward silences.

The atmosphere is so "toxic" that David Ritcherson stopped going to his classes last week. "It's hard to sit in class thinking one of those people at the party might be sitting next to you," he told the crowd at the church forum.

Ritcherson, head of the campus Black Student Union, is a product of tiny Community Harvest, a charter school in South Los Angeles. His 300 schoolmates were mostly black, compared with less than 2% of UC San Diego's student body.

That makes for a sad and isolating ratio and leaves minority students feeling vulnerable.

"You wonder what people are thinking of you," said Jennifer, a Latina who grew up in Compton. She seethes silently, she said, during classmates' "free speech" diatribes.

Other students told me similar stories of being afraid to speak up or even walk on campus alone.

So many students have missed classes or gone home that university officials have agreed not to penalize them academically.

Strolling the sunny, tree-lined campus, I found it hard to imagine backpack-carrying students as hooded racists. But it's clear the fear is real.

"I don't think anything is going to happen," said Zowie Agbaosi, a third-year student who -- like our president -- has a white mother and Nigerian father.

"But the noose, the hood . . . those are symbols intended to instill fear. It makes you wonder how far it will go," she said.

I have a story that needs to be heard. I am the girl you’ve read about, the one who hung the noose in Geisel Library.

Firstly, I’m writing to apologize. I don’t have an excuse for what I did, and I deeply regret it.

Secondly, I’m writing to hopefully put a little bit of faith back into the UCSD campus by clarifying that it was not an act of racism. This is what happened.

I found a small piece of rope on the ground earlier in the day. While I was hanging out with my friends a bit later, we tried jump- roping with it and making it into a lasso. My friend then took the rope and tied it into a noose. I innocently marveled at his ability to tie a noose, without thinking of any of its connotations or the current racial climate at UCSD. I left soon after with one of my friends for Geisel to study, still carrying the rope. After a bit of studying I picked up the rope to play with, and ended up hanging it by my desk. It was a mindless act and stupid mistake. When I got up to leave, a couple hours later, I simply forgot about it. This was Tuesday night. Three days later, on Friday morning, I found out that the noose had been found and construed as another racist act on campus. I felt so ashamed and embarrassed, and the first thing I did was call the campus police and confess. I was hoping to clarify that this was not an act of racism before the incident got a full reaction from the campus. I gave my statement around 9 a.m. They thanked me for coming forward and for trying to clear up the issue. Later, I received a campuswide e-mail saying that I confessed and had been taken into custody, which simply wasn’t true. One thing that is true is that I have been suspended. I know what I did was offensive — regardless of my intentions — I am just trying to say I’m sorry. As a minority student who sympathizes with the students that have been affected by the recent issues on campus, I am distraught to know that I have unintentionally added to their pain.

Sean: No I held back because I wanted to write freely about him early on. But I think I know where you're going and I'd like to say ya know so much of what America is in rebuilding itself financially, the federal reserve, our system of currency is so much smoke and mirrors and so much of what we are as a dominant personality in the world. And that personality is THINNED OF CHARACTER at this point. And the character investment in Haiti is the beginning of a seed of a building of America that we haven't lived in our lifetime.

What gets cut off in the last clip is a great point that Michael Moore makes: we didn't hear much about Chile because in Chile they had strict building regulations so when an earthquake that was of a much greater magnitude struck, less than 1000 people died. However in Haiti, what Moore calls a "Republicans Paradise" (due to lack of regulations), hundreds of thousands perished. He compared this to our current financial state. We have returned to playing the game as usual with no sanctions and no regulations. They are continuing to rob us blind.

In the spirit of black history month, I have a little story to share. The other day I was thoroughly annoyed by a series of text messages that essentially attacked my being "an intelligent black female who is passionate about music" and not getting upset by John Mayer's recent outburst (see article HERE). Now I'm not quite sure in that elongated title I was given if I was supposed to more upset that John Mayer referred to his penis as a "white supremacist" and that it didn't like black women or that he got a "Nigga pass". Either way, "intelligent black female" that I was, I was supposed to be enraged.

But to his dismay, I was not. I was, however, very nonchalant. What I couldn't get him to understand is that this to me, wasn't prejudice or racism. This was a "rock star", someone in the public eye admittedly playing with the attention we were giving him. It was SHOCK value. It was also someone I knew to famous for playing the guitar because he was obsessed with Buddy Guy and wanted to play JUST like him. Buddy Guy is a black man and one of John Mayer's idols. So no, I wasn't upset. It was a spectacle that didn't affect me.

But today, I was upset.

In an invitation sent around my Alma Mater, UCSD, in either jest or true genuine spirit, a certain fraternity decided that THIS was how they should celebrate black history month:

Description
February marks a very important month in American society. No, i'm not referring to Valentines day or Presidents day. I'm talking about Black History month. As a time to celebrate and in hopes of showing respect, the Regents community cordially invites you to its very first Compton Cookout.

For guys: I expect all males to be rockin Jersey's, stuntin' up in ya White T (XXXL smallest size acceptable), anything FUBU, Ecko, Rockawear, High/low top Jordans or Dunks, Chains, Jorts, stunner shades, 59 50 hats, Tats, etc.

For girls: For those of you who are unfamiliar with ghetto chicks-Ghetto chicks usually have gold teeth, start fights and drama, and wear cheap clothes - they consider Baby Phat to be high class and expensive couture. They also have short, nappy hair, and usually wear cheap weave, usually in bad colors, such as purple or bright red.
They look and act similar to Shenaynay, and speak very loudly, while rolling their neck, and waving their finger in your face. Ghetto chicks have a very limited vocabulary, and attempt to make up for it, by forming new words, such as "constipulated", or simply cursing persistently, or using other types of vulgarities, and making noises, such as "hmmg!", or smacking their lips, and making other angry noises,grunts, and faces.
The objective is for all you lovely ladies to look, act, and essentially take on these "respectable" qualities throughout the day.

Several of the regents condos will be teaming up to house this monstrosity, so travel house to house and experience the various elements of life in the ghetto.

We will be serving 40's, Kegs of Natty, dat Purple Drank- which consists of sugar, water, and the color purple , chicken, koolaid, and of course Watermelon. So come one and come all, make ya self before we break ya self, keep strapped, get yo shine on, and join us for a day party to be remembered- or not.

Um....WTF?

Seriously we serve only 2% at that campus and this is how Regents is allowing students to disrespect and represent us? What kind of modern day coonery/black faced mockery/hose us down why don't ya/might as well just throw the lynch ropes up while you're at it/ insult is this?!

When I started seeing these HP ads last year,

I thought to myself, "how cool, some hipsters are gonna take an awesome trip to Africa and document it all while being sponsored by a computer co...AWESOME. They'll probably get cool gadgets to document it too." Yeah it says it in the ad but who really pays attention to commercials?

Then I found out what it was really about.

Kenna "and friends" decided to raise awareness for the GLOBAL WATER CRISIS by climbing Mount Kilimanjaro and documenting the feat. THIS is beyond awesome, it's an act of a global citizen. Taking yourself out of your bubble, comfort zone and not only pushing yourself to the limit but also forcing yourself to treasure a FREE COMMODITY we routinely take for granted.

I often bring up the joke Chris Rock once told about how we are the only spoiled ass nation that wastes money on things like bottled water.....it's free. Think about it....Check it...

I just met Eminem again, for the first time in 10 years. Don't get me wrong, we've spoken at least a half-dozen times since our initial introduction back in May of '98, when I interviewed him for BLAZE Magazine. But the guy I dealt with in those intervening years? Well, he was a different person. The dude I met in that strip mall parking lot more than a decade ago, listening to mixes on the stock system of his Buick rental, was outgoing, hilarious, genuine, razor-sharp, and endlessly talented. He was a walking adventure and an inspiration. But, with him being overwhelmed by the fame—and then the work, and then the drugs—every encounter we shared after the release of The Slim Shady LP got incrementally more awkward, involved less eye contact, and left me feeling more concerned about the collateral damage of his unmitigated success.

For the first few years this change was to be expected, as his ubiquitous celebrity necessitated isolation, and his grueling schedule of albums, tours, and movies would be enough to wear down even the most rugged. But the relationship hit its nadir, for me, with an interview in February of 2006—weeks before the murder of his best friend, Proof. I had no idea the depth of his troubles, but detached, glassy-eyed, and at least 30 pounds heavier than just six months prior, Eminem seemed to be plunging off the deep end. I don't know Em well enough to call him Marshall, but I do know enough to say with certainty that the bloated space cadet at that shoot was not the guy I'd met wearing that same damn Nike hat. And as the aforementioned personal tragedy unfolded, and the public became more aware of his deteriorating condition, from a distance it really felt like Em might be living out the frequent and unwelcome comparisons to Elvis— specifically, an untimely, pill-addled end.

Thankfully, Em's survivor spirit, and the help of his most trusted loved ones, stymied his addiction. Seeing Em reemerge healthy, thin, and drug-free with Relapse this spring, I—and damn near everyone else who likes to hear words rhymed skillfully—breathed easy. Sure, he seemed serious and sometimes stiff on his press tour. And the album, despite mostly positive reviews, caught its share of critical flak for its formulaic roll-out (poppy "nyeah-nyeah" first single, dark second single, etc). None of that mattered, though; Eminem was back! And those who knew shit about shit knew the music was damn good. And the fans spoke with their wallets—to the tune of 1.5 million units, the highest-selling rap record of 2009.

Which brings me back to our reintroduction today in Detroit. Animated, relaxed, funny, and most importantly, fully engaged, the guy sitting across from me is once again the dude that I met over a decade ago. And what's more, it's clear that as The Slim Shady LP only teased at Eminem's potential as an artist, Relapse only teases at the promise of his recovery. His awe-inspiring, precise performance on the A-list posse cut of the year, "Forever," is more than just a reminder of Eminem's maniacally focused talent in full gear—it's a promise. And a challenge. Relapse 2 is to Relapse what The Dark Knight was to Batman Begins. That's my word.

Pulling himself away from his pursuit of happiness (mixing a Just Blaze-produced future classic), Em sat with Complex to discuss his chase of the perfect album, his obsessive compulsions, and what exactly a Spankwire is. It's nice to meet him. Again.

You've had about five months to sit with your "comeback," Relapse. What are your feelings about it now?

Eminem: I was happy with it when I put it out—but honestly, I haven't given it too much thought since then because I've been so busy working on Relapse 2.

So the sequel won't reflect your reaction to the first one and its reception?

Eminem: Well, when I finished Relapse, I had a whole album of material that didn't make it that I wasn't ready to throw away, so that was going to be Relapse 2. But then I got with Dre in Hawaii and started recording more, and now the new material has knocked out all the old songs. But yeah, the new material is definitely different. Making Relapse, I was still working the drugs out of my system, so there was a lot of...just jokey shit. It was a lot of punchline-y, funny, shock value—kind of going back to The Slim Shady LP. And that was cool, but I've kind of flipped the page. Now I'm going for songs instead of one-liners. I don't want to make shit that you hear once and then the joke's over; I want to make records that you could play a hundred times, a thousand times.

I'm a little baffled. More than baffled, I'm lost. I can somewhat understand this concept of how it's "unnatural" for some men to stay monogamous but things are getting out of hand. I received the following on the archaic social network that is Myspace today and it sparked this commentary, please read:

WHAT?!

Is this what we're doing these days? Now I'm not particularly into titles. I'm a libra, we like admirers and lovers but THIS...this is a bit much.

In recent weeks, I seem to be having the same conversation: Everybody cheats....do your thing....blah blah blah....

When did my generation lose touch with intimacy? I refuse to believe that this is our fate. Staying together, unhappy just for children. Having multiple partners to no end. Is nobody else terrified of disease? Because I for sure am...

Now I understand love is a different word, mechanism, action, expression to everyone. But is it completely lost on us 80's babies? Have we traded partnership for a nut? One can't help but wonder: for us fast living, quick witted, movers and shakers of generation Y does happily come never or after all the crap and frog-kissing?

By default, we are a rather pessimistic generation, fond of the words "FUCK IT" and "KEEP IT PUSHING" but I don't know if I'm sold or buying into settling. Susan Surandon and Tim Robbins might have split but I still got Kurt Russel and Goldie Hawn! There's hope. Not to mention my grandparents have been married over 50 years and while some may say they don't make that anymore, they do where I come from.

So basically, I think it comes to choice. We CHOOSE much like with everything else to not ask for more. But imagine what would happen if we did....

Well I hope everyone had a lovely holiday...it seems some had more eventful days than others (I know I did).

Enter Tiger Woods Head Casers....Now I'll admit I just got all the "details" today...but it sounds like Tiger is doing what everybody preaches and practicing NO SNITCHING! Not on his wifey or his hoe or himself...I'm just saying...

Now he says:
As you all know, I had a single-car accident earlier this week, and sustained some injuries. I have some cuts, bruising and right now I'm pretty sore.

This situation is my fault, and it's obviously embarrassing to my family and me. I'm human and I'm not perfect. I will certainly make sure this doesn't happen again.

This is a private matter and I want to keep it that way. Although I understand there is curiosity, the many false, unfounded and malicious rumors that are currently circulating about my family and me are irresponsible.

The only person responsible for the accident is me. My wife, Elin, acted courageously when she saw I was hurt and in trouble. She was the first person to help me. Any other assertion is absolutely false.

This incident has been stressful and very difficult for Elin, our family and me. I appreciate all the concern and well wishes that we have received. But, I would also ask for some understanding that my family and I deserve some privacy no matter how intrusive some people can be.

....I hate dating.

I hate the entire process of starting over and getting to know someone's likes and dislikes, figuring out if you like them and then figuring out if you fit into them. Slowly but surely letting out all your weird quirks and hoping you've found a kindred spirit as opposed to looking like the big weird kid that you are. It's one big awkward ordeal and my inner reaction is somewhat similar to Carrie Bradshaw and wedding dresses.

But it's inevitable....as my friend so aptly put it last night, "You can't say fuck love forever."

Well why the fuck not?

In a perfect world, we would ignore all our past experiences that makes us who we are and just act and embark upon a new experience with no pretense and completely free. But who are we kidding, when it comes down to it, we're all scared shitless. ALL of us. The men blame the women and vice versa but above all it comes down to FEAR.

Think about it the minute you realize you begin to like someone, what happens? Every fiber in your body switches to WIM also known as What If Mode:

"What if this could work? So far so flippin good so does that mean I actually have to start thinking about this stuff again?

What if I put into practice what I learned from last time?

Oh man remember last time??...."

And so it begins....and so do the decisions that will ultimately affect the new venture you have just set out upon.

Here's where it gets tricky, you can either stay locked up in what I like to call the "3 month bliss" before things get comfortable and nobody can do any wrong. Nobody exists but you guys and you really don't care about anything else. Or you seek advice on what to do from your nearest and dearest. Now as with any advice, you have to take into consideration your source. Perhaps it's that friend who loves love and gushes over every detail. Maybe it's you're hardened confidant who's closed off to love for whatever (give it valid) reason so finds the negative immediately and has uber persuasive arguments. Or maybe it's the friend who seemingly can't help her judgement because she has an inadvertent thing for "bad boys" that have repeatedly hurt her and she just can't see up anymore.

Bottom line, while they all may mean well, YOU'RE in it and everyone else is speaking from their circumstance and not your current interaction. They can't help it and sometimes, actually at all times will never see the entire picture. So what do you do? You keep your bliss TO YOURSELF. Like your dreams.

Plain and simple. Those who love you will support what makes you happy...or so we hope....

The heroine is Clareece Jones (Gabourey Sidibe), a Harlem teen-ager better known as Precious. She is grimly overweight, her face so filled out that the play of normal expression seems restricted; yet Sidibe does wonders with that sad limitation, and we learn to spot the flare of anger in her eyes. She has much to be angry about: aged sixteen, she already has one child, who has Down syndrome, and is carrying another. The father is her own father, who later turns out to be H.I.V. positive. We are forced to watch as she is violated in livid closeup, complete with squeaking bedsprings, a belt being unbuckled above a sweating belly, and—lest the seething aggression of the rape escape us—a shot of eggs sizzling in grease. If the subject were not so grave, you would be tempted to laugh at this desperate overkill of detail. Does the director, Lee Daniels, not realize how such industrial-strength images tend to weaken, rather than fortify, the moral case?

Expelled for being pregnant, Precious seeks alternative schooling at Each One Teach One, a local program for those undesired elsewhere. Her classmates, especially Jo Ann (Xosha Roquemore), whose favorite color is “fluorescent beige,” and Rhonda (Chyna Layne), with her fabulously broad Jamaican accent, are the most naturally uplifting people in the film—far more so than their teacher, Blu Rain (Paula Patton), whose powers of uplift feel like make-believe. She is a vision of tolerant gentleness, who wears a new set of soft fabrics every day and plays Scrabble in the evening with her equally lovely lesbian partner. “They talk like TV stations I don’t watch,” Precious says, but that tart line is not borne out by the film, which drinks in Ms. Rain without demur. The same goes for the fantasy sequences—hugely ill-advised dream clips, showing a richly clad Precious at a movie première or slow-dancing with a hunk. One of them even finds a slender white girl gazing back at her from the bedroom mirror. What we have here is a fouled-up fairy tale of oppression and empowerment, and it’s hard not to be ensnared by its mixture of rank maleficence and easy reverie. The gap between being genuinely stirred and having your arm twisted, however, is narrower than we care to admit.

What rescues “Precious” is the performance of Mo’Nique as Mary, the heroine’s Medusa-like mother. Given her range of leisure interests—smoking, cursing, channel surfing, baby tossing, munching pigs’ feet, and throwing televisions down the stairs—there is no reason that the character should be more than a vicious cartoon. But Mo’Nique gives tremendous life to this dead soul, makes you wonder where her own misery sprouted from, and closes the proceedings with a monologue of selfishness so storm-driven that for a second, despite ourselves, we are almost swept away. Sitting opposite during this tempest is a social worker, Mrs. Weiss (Mariah Carey). Hold on: a stern, song-free, compassionate piece of acting from Mariah Carey? That sounds like one of Precious’s fantasies, but it’s for real. ♦

Fatal LAPD Car Crash Raises Questions

A police spokesman familiar with the accident could not be reached Monday afternoon.

Devin Petelski, 25, of Brentwood, was driving home minutes after midnight Friday from the treatment center where she worked as a substance abuse counselor when she was hit by the police car.

A police statement issued Friday said she stopped at the Glyndon Avenue stop sign, then pulled into the intersection to turn right onto Venice Boulevard.

That’s when the police car heading east on Venice hit the driver’s side of her BMW.

She died Sunday after doctors at UCLA Medical Center took her off life support, Medak said.

The LAPD Pacific Division police officer driving the other car suffered a broken right arm and a serious cut to his left arm. The officer who was a passenger in the patrol car suffered cuts and bruises, according to the police statement. Their names were not released.

Residents who live near where the crash occurred said they heard neither sirens nor brakes before the crash, only the sound of the police car hitting Petelski’s.

“Moments before the crash I heard the acceleration of an engine roaring up Venice Boulevard, and then I heard the impact,” Bonnie Wolfe wrote in an e-mail to KPCC.

Wolfe, who lives near the crash site, said a city bus she saw parked at the curb might have obscured the two drivers’ views of each others’ vehicles.

Medak said he spoke with a woman who was driving behind the police car and saw the crash. The police car was flashing its emergency lights as it drove on Lincoln Boulevard, but the lights were apparently switched off when the car turned onto Venice, the witness, Krysta Ohle, told him.

“Yet they maintained the same emergency response speed, in excess of 60 mph,” Medak said.

Witnesses said it took as much as 15 minutes for city paramedics to arrive.

Medak described Petelski as a woman who, after struggling with alcoholism, had been sober for two years and was dedicated to helping others recover.

“This was one of those rare individuals,” said Medak.

Petelski, the daughter of Ron Petelski and Shaunnah Godfrey, grew up in Brentwood and attended Crossroads School in Santa Monica. She attended Northwestern University and more recently UC Santa Barbara, pursuing a degree in communications, Medak said. She is also survived by her brother Michael.

A memorial service for Petelski is set for 1 p.m. Friday at Brentwood Presbyterian Church, 12000 W. San Vicente Blvd. in Los Angeles.

Tuesday update: Los Angeles Police detective Jesse Ravega, who is investigating the crash for the West Traffic Division said it occurred at 11:55 p.m. Thursday.

The police officer who was driving the patrol car sustained a broken hand, not arm, he said, quoting an updated press statement dated today.

He declined to say why the officers were driving on Venice Blvd., or to say what speed, lights or siren were being used at the time of the crash because an investigation is continuing. He asked witnesses who have details to share to contact him at (323) 473-0236.

New Medical Marijuana Policy: Obama Administration Will Not Seek Arrests For People Following State Laws

WASHINGTON — The Obama administration will not seek to arrest medical marijuana users and suppliers as long as they conform to state laws, under new policy guidelines to be sent to federal prosecutors Monday.

Two Justice Department officials described the new policy to The Associated Press, saying prosecutors will be told it is not a good use of their time to arrest people who use or provide medical marijuana in strict compliance with state laws.

The new policy is a significant departure from the Bush administration, which insisted it would continue to enforce federal anti-pot laws regardless of state codes.

Fourteen states allow some use of marijuana for medical purposes: Alaska, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont and Washington.

California is unique among those for the widespread presence of dispensaries – businesses that sell marijuana and even advertise their services. Colorado also has several dispensaries, and Rhode Island and New Mexico are in the process of licensing providers, according to the Marijuana Policy Project, a group that promotes the decriminalization of marijuana use.

Attorney General Eric Holder said in March that he wanted federal law enforcement officials to pursue those who violate both federal and state law, but it has not been clear how that goal would be put into practice.

A three-page memo spelling out the policy is expected to be sent Monday to federal prosecutors in the 14 states, and also to top officials at the FBI and the Drug Enforcement Administration.

The memo, the officials said, emphasizes that prosecutors have wide discretion in choosing which cases to pursue, and says it is not a good use of federal manpower to prosecute those who are without a doubt in compliance with state law.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the legal guidance before it is issued.

"This is a major step forward," said Bruce Mirken, communications director for the Marijuana Policy Project. "This change in policy moves the federal government dramatically toward respecting scientific and practical reality."

At the same time, the officials said, the government will still prosecute those who use medical marijuana as a cover for other illegal activity. The memo particularly warns that some suspects may hide old-fashioned drug dealing or other crimes behind a medical marijuana business.

In particular, the memo urges prosecutors to pursue marijuana cases which involve violence, the illegal use of firearms, selling pot to minors, money laundering or other crimes.

And while the policy memo describes a change in priorities away from prosecuting medical marijuana cases, it does not rule out the possibility that the federal government could still prosecute someone whose activities are allowed under state law.

The memo, officials said, is designed to give a sense of prosecutorial priorities to U.S. Attorneys in the states that allow medical marijuana. It notes that pot sales in the United States are the largest source of money for violent Mexican drug cartels, but adds that federal law enforcement agencies have limited resources.

Medical marijuana advocates have been anxious to see exactly how the administration would implement candidate Barack Obama's repeated promises to change the policy in situations in which state laws allow the use of medical marijuana.

Shortly after Obama took office, DEA agents raided four dispensaries in Los Angeles, prompting confusion about the government's plans.

"It’s all about the Beatles and Jay-Z this week on Billboard’s albums charts. Based on preliminary sales numbers from Nielsen SoundScan, Jay-Z’s “The Blueprint 3″ shifted 476,000 copies in the week that ended at the close of business on Sunday (Sept. 13) night. That will easily give Jay his 11th No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart when the new figures are released in the morning on Wednesday, Sept. 16.

As for the Beatles, preliminary figures indicate the Fab Four’s catalog of albums — including those titles not part of its new reissue series — sold a combined 626,000 units in the U.S. last week according to SoundScan. In the week previous (week ending Sept. 6), the band’s collective albums sold just 21,000."
